RADIO INTRODUCTION

The Radio Spectrum comprises the airwaves needed for devices of any kind to connect wirelessly and is a valuable national resource.  OfReg (or ‘the Office’) has been entrusted by the Government of the Cayman Islands to manage this resource on its behalf.

Pursuant to Sections 9(2)(c), 23(2) and 82 of the Information and Communications Technology Act (the ‘ICT Act’) OfReg is responsible for the licensing and regulation of all radio transmitters which fall under the jurisdiction of the Cayman Islands, including:

  • Equipment used by cellular and fixed wireless access ICT service providers
  • Radios in aircraft registered with the Cayman Islands Civil Aviation Office
  • Ground-to-air radios, radars and other aeronautical equipment located in the Cayman Islands
  • Radios on ships registered with the Cayman Islands Shipping Registry
  • Radios on unregistered ships operating in the coastal waters of the Cayman Islands
  • Land-based marine band radios used to communicate with vessels at sea
  • Amateur (Ham) radio
  • Land-mobile radio devices (including hand-held ‘walkie-talkies’, vehicle-mounted radios, base stations and repeaters)
  • Point-to-point links between two fixed locations

Radio licences are annual and must be renewed on each anniversary of their initial issue. More information about the licensing of radio services can be found here.
